Biochem/physiol Actions:
CHRNA3 is a transmembrane oligomeric ligand-gated nicotinic receptor which upon activation by cholinergic binding induces ion channel opening for the movement of positive ions. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors mediate presynaptic, postsynaptic and extrasynaptic signaling. CHRNA3 is abundantly present in the peripheral nervous system and regulates nicotine dependence, depression and trait affective disposition. Polymorphisms in the gene encoding CHRNA7 have been implicated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and nicotine addiction.
